Geoffrey Ames’s military career spans three decades, including service in the Marines, Army, National Guard and Reserves. Ames was interviewed while serving as a Senior Chaplain’s Assistant and after completing an M.A. History at Salem State. Originally from Saugus, MA, Ames joined the Marine 4th Division in 1976. His military service has included stints in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He received the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. His oral history touches on such issues as family history, the work of an Army Chaplain, the erosion of military discipline, and contemporary politics.
